Jonghyun oficially debuted as a member of SHINee in 2008, and ever since, he became popular among SHINee fans and k-pop fans overall for his light tone and emotional vocals, which have given him the place of the main vocalist of the group. Besides the fact that he is passionate about singing and he can be a great performer, showing singing and dancing skills at the same time with a proper intonation, Jonghyun also posesses a solid technique that is, arguably, better than most k-pop male idols.
VOCAL RANGE: G2 — C#6 (3 Octaves, 3 notes and a semitone)
Jonghyun has a particular timbre in his voice that makes him easily recognizable for some people. His vocal range plays an important part in his style of singing, and his vocal performances show a lot of vocal acrobatics that make him an agile and versatile vocalist.
Vocal positives: Jonghyun posseses a very balanced voice technique, because, although none of his features is “great”, none of them is undeveloped either. His higher register is one of the best among male idols and his lower and mixed register show a lot of improvement since his debut years. He has a very wide mixed range that can reach an F#5 (supported Fa 5).
Vocal negatives: His mixed register shows the most inconsitencies among all his registers because of a missplacement in notes above G#4 (supported Sol 4) that makes his straining quite evident. He can have a nasal placement at times and his resonance, although achieved, also presents inconsistencies.
- LOWER REGISTER
Jonghyun’s strongest point is in his lower register. He reach notes as down as C3 and ocasionally B2 with a proper support and a good placement, thus making his supported range to extend through all the third octave. However, notes below C3 become barely audible with a very low larynx and represent a very undeveloped part of his voice, mostly because he barely goes lower than D3/D#3 in his songs (see Crazy). - MIXED REGISTER
This might be the least developed part of his voice, but it does not mean his mixed register is undeveloped by any means. His inconsistencies are mostly in his placement above his supported range, that makes notes from A4 and above sound strained and, at times, nasal and yelled. In this point, his vocal runs lose accuracy and might even present problems in his legato (see Hot Times). However, notes below G#4 and ocasionally even G#4 can show a decent resonance with a non-nasal placement. - HIGHER REGISTER
The singer’s most distinctive register, Jonghyun’s head voice is present in most of his solo performances, due to a possible preference of the singer to use this register to reach higher notes rather than using his mixed voice. His falsetto is normally producen with a thin yet solid sound, with a good placement and ease (see Beautiful Tonight). His head voice is also well produced, although the placement of this might be nasal and, at times, show signs of strain as he goes higher than F#4/G4 (see Hot Times and Crazy).
Jonghyun has a very well rounded voice, in technical terms. He can produce all of the registers with a good consistency, a decent breath technique and he is able to show his agility abilities in songs that showcase the singer’s wide vocal range, such as Beautiful Tonight and Crazy. Despite not being the best vocalist and showing some inconsistencies in his singing, Jonghyun is a promising vocalist. He shows a lot of improvement since debut and he is capable of controlling his voice with relative ease now.
Recommended performance(s): Crazy, Gloomy Letter, Sleepless Night (with SHINee).
